INDUCEMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION LED TO MORE BLOOD TESTS

Thank you for the items donated by Good360 to Hepatitis NSW.

Hepatitis NSW is a not-for-profit charity started by the hepatitis community. We provide information, support, referral and advocacy for people affected by viral hepatitis in NSW. We work actively in partnership with other organisations and with the affected communities themselves to bring about improvements in quality of life, information, support and treatment, and to prevent hepatitis B and C transmission.

One of our partners is the harm reduction clinic at the South Court Primary Care Centre based at Nepean Hospital in Penrith. The clinic provides a range of services and counselling, as well as injecting equipment to patients of Hepatitis C which is spread by blood transmission, usually on injecting equipment or tattoos.

Julie Page at the clinic at South Court Primary Care Centre said, ‘Hepatitis NSW is a fantastic NGO, always working on ways to engage and educate the community about Hepatitis. In particular, they are working hard to spread the word about the new direct acting antiviral treatments for Hep C.’

Julie continued, ‘Hepatitis NSW provided us with forty gift bags to offer people who reviewed their magazines and brochures and provided feedback. It is often difficult for organisations to obtain feedback on their work but here the response has been very good.’

The ladies all loved the lipstick, shampoo and conditioner package. Everyone was really impressed by the flash drives. In fact, when people saw the flash drives, they were begging to participate. After reading the Hep NSW resources, several people had blood tests on the spot and more have asked about the new treatments. With any luck this will translate into more people who go onto treatment through our service.

The majority of the people who come here don’t have money left to buy any little luxuries. Two of the people who benefited were young women currently in a transitional centre, where they are obtaining skills before returning to the community from prison.

Some of the comments were:

‘One of the handiest gifts I’ve received, a great bag of nick knacks’.

‘I’m always grateful for anything I’m given at the NSP (Needle and Syringe Program)’.

‘It’s nice to know there are organisations and companies that care about services like the NSP and want to support them’. (Bruce, 57 years)

Thanks once again to Good360, for caring enough to help.
