The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia works with people in poverty and distress to create just and positive change through empowering partnerships and responsible action.
Just before Christmas ADRA placed an order with Good360 for 3 pallets of womens clothing from BIG W. The clothing that came helped our ladies, as many of the families in Mount Druitt and Macquarie Fields are single parents.
Most of the goods were given as part of our family Christmas hampers. We were giving gifts to children and the clothes meant we could give some thing extra to the mums.
Many of the ladies and children in our community that were wearing old clothes, as they could not afford new ones, received new clothes from BIG W.
Everyone was excited and happy! One lady said " I can dress up and go shopping and feel nice, its so nice just to feel like a lady!"
Another lady was happy to know that " I can go to my parents for Christmas and feel and look nice."
One lady came with her daughter. We will call her Barb (to protect identity). She told us that she had lived with her partner and were soon to be married, however he had a heart attack and died. They lived together but when he died his family kicked her out of the house and would not let her get any of her things. So she moved in with her daughter. She could not afford anything so was wearing her daughters clothes. One of the volunteers asked Barb, was there anything else that she needed and she asked if we had any second hand clothing. The Volunteer replied we can do better. Barb was in tears when she saw new clothes that actually fitted her and could be her own. She was speechless and thankful to receive new clothing.
Another lady said I have been working just to pay the rent and keep my family, my husband isn’t getting much work either because it is seasonal work. Christmas time is always hard as we cannot afford much. I have needed clothes for a while but my children would always come first. These clothes have come to me at a time when I cannot afford anything. Thank you.
