LEGO helps with Parenting

A newly arrived refugee Arabic Assyrian mother participate in a 9-week parenting program in the City of Hume. At the end of the course, a LEGO cookie cutter was given to the mother and her 4-year-old child. The child was excited to receive a present and commented “Mom, I got a present, a cookie cutter; when we go home, we will make cookies”. That evening, the child asked his mother for the cookie cutter set and wanted to make the cookies. The child spent time with his father and mother preparing and rolling the cookie dough. The mother reported that the father and his son enjoyed having the conversation about the recipe and making the cookies which focused on fun, language, and learning. The mother reported that she implemented the parenting skills she learned during the parenting course using “child-led play and descriptive praise of the child’s work, effective listening, and “I statement". The child told the mother that he will keep the cookie cutters in the kitchen to be used for the next time.
“My child was excited to use the cookie cutters to make shapes with the toasted bread”. “We felt that making an activity with the cookie cutters made us come together to spend time as a family. It created a safe environment that we all focused on the play, conversation and have fun”
Thanks Good360 and LEGO.
