Food Hub supporting University of Tasmania students.

The rising cost of living and the issue of food insecurity have significantly affected 42% of University of Tasmania (UTAS) students.
In response, the Tasmanian University Student Association (TUSA) established a Food Hub (Sandy Bay, Hobart) in July 2023. Recent data has shown the significant impact of the Food Hub: 3085 students accessed the hub between July - December 2023, with 92% reporting an improved level of food security. Additionally, 92% expressed satisfaction with the Food Hub, and 99% would recommend it to other students.
250kg+ of rescued fruit and vegetables redistributed weekly in the Food Hub to students through our partnership with Loaves & Fishes. 20kg+ of donated bread redistributed weekly in the Food Hub to students through our partnership with Gateway Life.
TUSA contributed funding through staff employment positions and 15 students also volunteered to assist in the Food Hub.
Pantry items were also provided for free to students, through a $10k donation from the Tasmanian Community Food Relief Fund and $20k provided from a UTAS Staff Giving Program. The Food Hub also received items through Good360 donated by McPherson's. The items were Akin brand shampoo, conditioner and hand wash, and they were so popular with students that we needed to limit one item per student to ensure there were enough to go around for everyone
As highlighted by a Food Hub Volunteer, "I believe what TUSA is doing with the Food Hub is game-changing for UTAS students."
