Learning through structured play

Our first order included 3 boxes of Minecraft LEGO. We are in the process of starting a LEGO club for students to engage in learning with our support teacher at break times. Many of our students find ‘free’ unstructured play difficult resulting in negative behaviour and therefore negative consequences. To support the students our Support teacher has set up the beginnings of a LEGO club for a selected small group of students, as we collect more LEGO, we will expand this to include additional students. The students are building many skills whilst working alongside our support teacher: skills of turn-taking, communication, following instructions, the art of having to transition between tasks, fine motor skills and much much more. They are also building relationships with each other and a trusted adult all at the same time. We look forward to the opportunity to build our group to expand this experience for a larger number of students.
The Minecraft LEGO is a great find for us as it is engaging for a large group of students and quite topical. Each of our classrooms has LEGO sets for general student use. Still, the teacher does not often get the opportunity to use LEGO as a teaching tool as they are not able to engage in the task with the students and it is used as a more independent self-guided task.
