Connecting at Risk Women

Imagine a world without violence. Thanks to Optus SIM cards, we have been able to support women who are escaping violent situations and those at risk of harm from alcohol and other drugs (AOD) by keeping them connected to their caseworkers, families, and other support networks. The Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre, in partnership with The Buttery, now operates the Nimbin AOD Hub, which supports anyone in the Nimbin community impacted by AOD issues.

Recently, a young woman reached out for help from our AOD Hub. She was homeless and did not have a mobile phone, making it difficult for services like Services Australia to contact her. As a result, her Jobseeker payment was cancelled due to her inability to maintain communication. After experiencing violence from her intimate partner, she found herself alone on the streets. Another service provided her with a mobile phone, and NNIC gifted her an Optus SIM card, which allowed her caseworker to reach out and assist her in reinstating her benefits.

We have discovered that many participants in our programs lack access to mobile phones, which creates another barrier to accessing services. This woman’s story is just one example of how the generosity of Optus and Good360 is making a difference by bridging the digital divide and keeping vulnerable individuals connected to the support they need. Connecting one woman positively impacts many others, including her family, support network, and service providers.
