Upstander Awards

Our school introduced the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support Framework over the last 2 years. When tracking our behaviour data, we noticed that a number of minor behaviours included students being disrespectful to each other. We then introduced 'Expect Respect' to empower students with the skills to call out disrespectful behaviour. As a way to encourage students to step in and help each other in times of distress, we then introduced the 'Upstander Award'. Students can self-nominate, be nominated by another student or a staff member. Since the introduction of this award, we have given out 4 awards over the last 6 months. All awards were for students who bravely called out behaviour that was not OK, and took steps to seek help. Students can choose to be publicly or privately awarded their certificate and prize, depending on the situation.
Our most recent Upstander was a private award, as the recipient had intervened in a situation involving calling out her friend's behaviour.
Upstanders receive a certificate of acknowledgement and a LEGO prize pack made possible by the donors of Good360. Thank you Good360 and LEGO Australia
