LEGO Club is Changing Lives

What do you think of when you hear the word LEGO? An educational toy for kids? The pain that comes from stepping on a brick in the middle of the night? For a group of mothers in Sanctuary Point on the NSW South Coast, LEGO now means social connection, creativity, fun, and relaxation.
When a donation of LEGO sets came to BCR Communities from Good360, Community Program Officer Rohanna Holland knew exactly what to do with them.
Instead of donating the sets to kids as you would expect, Rohanna decided to start an afternoon LEGO club for the mums with onsite child minding provided.
“There are so many women in our community who are experiencing hardship right now due to rental stress and the rising cost of living,” Rohanna said.
“And these stresses come on the back of the bushfires, COVID lockdowns, floods – it has been tough for many women in our area and has affected them emotionally and socially.”
“Now with the Afternoon LEGO Club, the mums can have a couple of hours a week where they can escape their everyday stresses and just relax and have some fun together.”
According to Rohanna, the Afternoon Lego Club works on many levels. Being involved in a hands-on, engaging activity makes social connection easy. The mothers have a chat and a laugh, and support each other with parenting advice while they work together on their LEGO creations.
“Building with LEGO also promotes mindfulness which is about being present in the moment and forgetting their worries,” Rohanna said.
Thank you!
