"I was really struggling to scrape money together for the basics, including food for my family.”
This is what Amarah, who was at a crisis point with her children, says. A reduced disability pension and inability to work made her incredibly vulnerable. A friend told her about a place that would help her out with food and supplies, Food4Thought at the Darwin Adventist Church.
Here, Amarah received not just the food/ grooming, shoes for her children she needed, but also the support and friendship she desperately missed.
“The first time I came in I was in tears with thankfulness, just with the help and how lovely people were. I just wanted to be part of it.
“The very next week I started volunteering!”
Having overcome her own crisis through the support of Food4thought and Good360 Amarah is now helping others do the same.
As Australia was forced into isolation, Amarah and the Food4thought team quickly adjusted their program so that instead of people coming to them, they’d take the goods and friendship to people’s doors.
“I come in, pack boxes and then deliver them with another volunteer,” she says. “We have notes about people’s cats or dogs, or particular needs. We aim to make it really personal.
Amarah and her kids want to say a huge thank you to Good360 and its product donors! She said. “You never know where your donations go, but believe me, we put them to very good use. And we just thank you for your kindness and your help. It is greatly appreciated.”
